After more than 8 years on Main Street in Whitesboro, Quixotic Fibers went through a transitional phase as we moved the shop to Denison, Texas and Carla and Curtis moved to Florida.  We took a little time to "find ourselves" and we are really excited about what has come out of it all.

Quixotic Fibers has found its forever home at the historic Katy Depot in Denison, Texas.  Denison is a vibrant, award winning Main Street City with an active Arts Council.   In 2024 we yarn-bombed the benches on Main Street for the annual Dia de los Muertos festival and we were thrilled to be invited to do it again for the annual Arts Festival in May 2025.

Our big new store in the beautiful Katy Depot is simply amazing.  We have a classroom, a kitchen, lots of space for yarns and tools and doodads, and the most amazing natural light.  We've got a great big table right by the windows and you are welcome to sit and knit/crochet/spin/tat/embroider any time.  Our goal has always been to create a happy place for the fiber community, and we feel like we have found the perfect venue for it.

Zephyrhills, Florida:  Carla and Curtis are now living in Zephyrhills, Florida.  Carla loves her new outdoor dye kitchen in the carport and she loves the effect that the local water has on her signature colors.  She gets very homesick for the Texas fiber community and comes back as often as she can.

Carla opened a small shop in Zephyrhills, but it was really too much for her to manage.  She finally decided to close the shop in August 2025 and was thrilled when a mother-daughter team decided to purchase the store and reopen it as The Yarn Store.  Carla will be teaching classes at The Yarn Store, and it will be the only place other than Quixotic Fibers where you will be able to find Quixotic yarns.

What's with the name?

People often ask about our name.  Here's the wiktionary definition:

quixotic /kwɪkˈsɑtɪk/, /kwɪɡˈzɑtɪk/

  1. Possessing or acting with the desire to do noble and romantic deeds, without thought of realism and practicality; exceedingly idealistic.
  2. Impulsive.
  3. Like Don Quixote; romantic to extravagance; absurdly chivalric; apt to be deluded.

As in:

  1. I will knit and crochet impossibly beautiful things.
  2. Of course I can spin all of this fiber in my lifetime.
  3. I love all of my teal yarns, but there is an even more perfect teal that is yet-to-be-dyed.

We love the name because we are quirky (ok:  odd and nerdy), and we believe that knitting, crochet, spinning, and weaving are a grand adventure where wonderful things can happen if you only dare to dream big.

Our Story

When people visit Quixotic Fibers for the first time, they often comment about the breadth and quality of the selection that we offer.  We believe that you should knit/crochet with the highest quality yarn that you can afford, and it is our mission to provide you with the best possible selection of quality fiber in gorgeous colors … in all price ranges.

Quixotic Fibers is owned by Curtis (the Enabler) and Carla, an obsessive knitter, crocheter, spinner, and dyer, and a beginner weaver.  Carla and Curtis moved to Lake Texoma in 2014 and every time they went to Whitesboro’s lovely Main Street Carla would say “Someone needs to open a yarn shop next to that awesome Kaleidoscope Quilt Shop.”  When Curtis came home one day and announced that the shop next door to Kaleidoscope was available, it was clear that it was meant to be.

A couple years later a young mother with a little baby came into the shop several times over the course of a couple weeks.  When she joked that she might as well work there because she was in the shop so much, Curtis offered her a job.  Emilie says that we haven't been able to get rid of her since, but the truth is that we won't let her go.  Brooks (aka Yarn Shop Baby #1), is now six.  He's grown up in the shop, has learned to knit, wants to learn to spin, and his vocabulary includes phrases like:  "she dropped her stitches."

We are a full service yarn and fiber store and our goal is to offer you the best quality yarns that you can afford.  We are snobs about quality, but not about price.  We spend a lot of time seeking out high quality yarns that are less expensive than the luxury hand-dyed yarns that we all love so much but are not always suitable for the budget allotted to a particular project.

We also emphasize that we are crochet friendly.  At our Denison store we have Karen, who can crochet anything, usually without a pattern.  Carla enjoys crochet as well as knitting and can help with most questions.  We stock a wide range of hooks and books for the crocheter.
