About Us
After more than 8 years on Main Street in Whitesboro, Quixotic Fibers has moved to two new, separate locations. We are still one big family and this online catalog represents the combined inventory of the two stores.
Denison, Texas: Our new Texas store is located in Denison at the Katy Depot on 101 East Main Street. Emilie manages the Denison store, with the expert assistance of Karen (and the yarn shop babies, of course).
Zephyrhills, Florida: Quixotic Fibers Florida is located on Fifth Avenue in Zephyrhills. Carla manages that store and is looking for knitters and crocheters who would like to help her in the shop as part-time employees!
Dye Studio: The dye studio has also moved to Zephyrhills, but it will be stocking both stores with our signature quality yarns in our distinctive palettes.
Looking for something that we don't have listed here? Please send us an email at emilie@quixoticfibers.com, or call the store at 903-564-3740. If we have it in stock, or can order it for you, we will be happy to send it to you!
What's with the name?
People often ask about our name. Here's the wiktionary definition:
quixotic /kwɪkˈsɑtɪk/, /kwɪɡˈzɑtɪk/
- Possessing or acting with the desire to do noble and romantic deeds, without thought of realism and practicality; exceedingly idealistic.
- Impulsive.
- Like Don Quixote; romantic to extravagance; absurdly chivalric; apt to be deluded.
As in:
- I will knit and crochet impossibly beautiful things.
- Of course I can spin all of this fiber in my lifetime.
- I love all of my teal yarns, but there is an even more perfect teal that is yet-to-be-dyed.
We love the name because we are quirky (ok: odd and nerdy), and we believe that knitting, crochet, spinning, and weaving are a grand adventure where wonderful things can happen if you only dare to dream big.
Our Story
When people visit Quixotic Fibers for the first time, they often comment about the breadth and quality of the selection that we offer. We believe that you should knit/crochet with the highest quality yarn that you can afford, and it is our mission to provide you with the best possible selection of quality fiber in gorgeous colors … in all price ranges.
Quixotic Fibers is owned by Curtis (the Enabler) and Carla, an obsessive knitter, crocheter, spinner, and dyer, and a beginner weaver. Carla and Curtis moved to Lake Texoma in 2014 and every time they went to Whitesboro’s lovely Main Street Carla would say “Someone needs to open a yarn shop next to that awesome Kaleidoscope Quilt Shop.” When Curtis came home one day and announced that the shop next door to Kaleidoscope was available, it was clear that it was meant to be.
A couple years later a young mother with a little baby came into the shop several times over the course of a couple weeks. When she joked that she might as well work there because she was in the shop so much, Curtis offered her a job. Emilie says that we haven't been able to get rid of her since, but the truth is that we won't let her go. Brooks (aka Yarn Shop Baby #1), is now six. He's grown up in the shop, has learned to knit, wants to learn to spin, and his vocabulary includes phrases like: "she dropped her stitches."
We are a full service yarn and fiber store and our goal is to offer you the best quality yarns that you can afford. We are snobs about quality, but not about price. We spend a lot of time seeking out high quality yarns that are less expensive than the luxury hand-dyed yarns that we all love so much but are not always suitable for the budget allotted to a particular project.
We also emphasize that we are crochet friendly. At our Denison store we have Karen, who can crochet anything, usually without a pattern. Carla enjoys crochet as well as knitting and can help with most questions. We stock a wide range of hooks and books for the crocheter.
