Interested in designing your own one-of-a-kind Fair Isle project, including ski hats, headbands, Tam o’ Shanters, fisherman’s keps, mittens, gloves, and socks?

This design class will focus on Fair Isle accessories, with discussion of Fair Isle jumpers and cardigans.

Join us for this special Fair Isle design workshop, which includes all the tools, templates, and information necessary to create your ideal Fair Isle knitting pattern in a fingering weight yarn or traditional 2-ply jumper weight wool.

The workshop registration fee includes Jennifer Daley’s latest book, a 200-page hardback publication, titled:

Fair Isle Knitting Design Workbook:
Create Original Stranded Colorwork Accessories in Shetland Wool

The workbook is organized as a working, hands-on manual that includes design exercises, project activities, garment pattern templates, and opportunities to practice and develop new Fair Isle knitting designs within the boundaries of proven strategies.

The workbook focuses on the development of knitwear accessories. However, the concepts discussed in the book can support the designing of larger knitwear pieces, including jumpers and cardigans.

During class, students will be designing on paper, not knitting.

Students can attend the class with just a pencil and eraser, or they can additionally bring any (or all) of the following to facilitate the in-class design process:

  • Colored pencils
  • A tape measure or measuring device
  • Anything for design inspiration, including pictures, photographs or books
  • Ideas for their ideal Fair Isle accessory or garment, in terms of color, design, shape, and fit
  • Any existing Fair Isle knitted item that is an inspiration for a new design
  • Their own fingering weight yarn stash from which their design colorways can be determined
  • Any color cards of their favorite fingering weight yarn brand

The goal of this class is to empower students and knitters with the basic knowledge necessary to create original stranded colorwork knitting patterns that are truly unique to the students’ visions and specifications.

Written by professional Fair Isle knitwear designer and textile historian, Dr. Jennifer Daley, Fair Isle Knitting Design Workbook demystifies the color logic, structure, and visual language behind traditional Shetland stranded colorwork. With an emphasis on Shetland wool and accessories such as hats and mittens, the book bridges heritage techniques with contemporary design practice.

This class requires a minimum of 15 students
