Several people have asked me (Carla) to write the pattern for my "Rainbow Jacket", and I have concluded that it is much easier to walk someone through how to design and make their own version of it than it is to write a pattern that will work for everyone.

In this workshop you will learn how to construct your own pattern for a simple jacket that is knit sideways (with vertical stripes) from the center out.   In particular, we will cover:

  • Measuring for the jacket
  • Customizing the stripe and stitch patterns
  • Provisional cast on
  • Crochet edging

The original Rainbow Jacket requires approximately 1600-2400 yards of Risoni silk yarn, depending on the size and number of colors used.  Risoni is a fingering weight yarn, but the pattern can easily be adapted to any gauge or weight of yarn. The minimal shaping and loose construction makes it most suitable for a yarn that has a lot of drape and not too much stretch, like silk or linen.

You will need to select your yarn and knit and block a gauge swatch to bring to class.  The gauge swatch should be at least 6x6 inches.  Please don't hesitate to call or come in for help in preparing for the class.

Cost: $60  (free with the purchase of yarn for the jacket)

Instructor: Carla Billingsley

Carla Billingsley rediscovered knitting shortly after her 40th birthday when she fell in love with handpainted and novelty yarns. At first she only made rectangles and triangles: scarves, throws, and shawls.  Eventually she worked up the courage to try lace and socks.  After learning to turn her first heel she realized that you can learn anything if you set your mind to it, and that learning is really easy if you can take a class with a good teacher.  In 2014 she and her husband Curtis moved to Texas and in June 2015 they opened Quixotic Fibers.  From the beginning, her vision for the shop was that it is not just a place to buy yarn and fiber, but that it should become a community resource dedicated to the preservation and development of the fiber arts, a place where knitters, crocheters, weavers, and spinners can gather to learn from and to inspire each other.
