The Butterfly / Papillon Shawl pattern by Marin Melchior looks a lot more difficult than it is. Short rows are used to create an intricate pattern using two or more colors of yarn. The intricacy of the pattern also makes the written pattern look more intimidating than it really is.
The purpose of this class is to help you get started knitting this pattern. We will go over the abbreviations used in the pattern: what they mean and how to do each of them, such as "wrap and turn" and "make one left" and "make one right".
The most important technique used in this pattern is short rows. It is written for traditional "wrap and turn" short rows but can be converted to use German short rows quite easily. This class covers both methods of doing short rows and includes an exercise in which you will work two short sections from the pattern. This enables you to practice the technique and also to determine which method of short rows works best with your chosen yarn.
We will also go over some tips on how to keep track of your place in the pattern. If you would like to try using the free KnitCompanion app to keep the pattern on your tablet, please bring your tablet and we can get you started. The app is extremely easy to use.
Materials:
Pattern: You will need a copy of the pattern to participate. You can purchase it directly from the designer for $15 here. If you already own a copy, please bring It with you. If you would like for us to purchase a copy and print it for you, please select the "Pattern included" option when registering for the class.
Yarn: The shawl is knit using fingering weight yarn, and requires one 100 gram skein of a solid color and two 100 gram skeins of another color. Many of the most dramatic examples of this shawl were knit using a self-striping or gradient yarn like Urth's Uneek Fingering. A multi-colored yarn with shorter color repeats can also product stunning results. We have put together a wide variety of possible combinations as kits, which you can browse here. The possibilities are endless and we will be happy to help you put together a combination that you will love.
You will also need:
- US #4 circular needle with at least a 32?g cord. You may want a longer cord than that as the shawl gets larger.
- Stitch markers (40 of them)
Level: Intermediate Beginner. If you are completely comfortable with the plain knit stitch, you can do this!
Cost: $25 without pattern, $40 with a printed pattern.
Minimum # Students: 2
