Butterfly / Papillon Shawl - January 25 1:30-4:30 PMQuixotic Fibers
Saturday, January 25: 1:30-4:30 PM
The Butterfly / Papillon Shawl pattern by Marin Melchior looks a lot more difficult than it is. Short rows are used to create an intricate pattern using two or more colors of yarn. The intricacy of the pattern also makes the written pattern look more intimidating than it really is.
The purpose of this class is to help you get started knitting this pattern. We will go over the abbreviations used in the pattern: what they mean and how to do each of them, such as “wrap and turn” and “make one left” and “make one right”.
You will then knit the first sections of the pattern, which will allow you to practice all of the techniques required to complete the shawl.
We will also go over some tips on how to keep track of your place in the pattern. If you would like to try using the free KnitCompanion app to keep the pattern on your tablet, please bring your tablet and we can get you started. The app is extremely easy to use. If you prefer to use a paper copy, highlighter tape will be provided for you to mark your place.
This is a “free with purchase” class, meaning that you pay $25 to reserve your place in the class, but you receive a $25 gift certificate that you can redeem in the shop for any merchandise.
Pattern: You will need a copy of the pattern to participate. You can purchase it directly from the designer for $14 here. If you already own a copy, please bring It with you. If you would like for us to purchase a copy and print it for you, please select the “Pattern included” option when registering for the class.
Yarn: The shawl is knit using fingering weight yarn, and requires one 100 gram skein of a solid color and two 100 gram skeins of another color. Many of the most dramatic examples of this shawl were knit using a self-striping or gradient yarn like Urth’s Uneek Fingering. A multi-colored yarn with shorter color repeats can also product stunning results. We have put together a wide variety of possible combinations as kits, which you can browse here. The possibilities are endless and we will be happy to help you put together a combination that you will love.
You will also need:
- US #4 circular needle with at least a 32” cord. You may want a longer cord than that as the shawl gets larger.
- Stitch markers (40 of them)
Level: Intermediate Beginner. If you are completely comfortable with the plain knit stitch, you can do this!
Cost: $25 without pattern, $39 with pattern.
Instructor: Carla Billingsley
Carla Billingsley rediscovered knitting shortly after her 40th birthday when she fell in love with handpainted and novelty yarns. At first she only made rectangles and triangles: scarves, throws, and shawls. Eventually she worked up the courage to try lace and socks. After learning to turn her first heel she realized that you can learn anything if you set your mind to it, and that learning is really easy if you can take a class with a good teacher. In 2014 she and her husband Curtis moved to Texas and in June 2015 they opened Quixotic Fibers. From the beginning, her vision for the shop was that it is not just a place to buy yarn and fiber, but that it should become a community resource dedicated to the preservation and development of the fiber arts, a place where knitters, crocheters, weavers, and spinners can gather to learn from and to inspire each other.
