Knitting in the round with two colors is the easiest way to begin learning brioche.

Learn the basic brioche knit and brioche purl stitches while knitting a two-color brioche cowl in the round. We will be using Lavanya Patricella's Beginner's Brioche Cowl pattern. This is written for bulky yarn. While we can easily adjust it for worsted weight yarn by adding stitches, I strongly recommend that you use a bulky weight yarn because fewer stitches allows you to knit rounds faster and get more practice in the tricky part of transitioning at the end of a round.

Materials:

  • 2 skeins (100 grams each) of bulky yarn in contrasting colors.
  • For bulky yarn, 16 inch circular needles in size 10.5 or 11.  For brioche it is often necessary to go down a needle size to avoid the stitches being too loose, so please bring a needle one size smaller from what you would normally use for the yarn you choose.

Level: Intermediate Beginner. Students must be completely comfortable with the knit and purl stitches.

Cost: $25, includes the Ravelry/PDF version of the pattern

Instructor: Carla Billingsley

Carla Billingsley rediscovered knitting shortly after her 40th birthday when she fell in love with handpainted and novelty yarns. At first she only made rectangles and triangles: scarves, throws, and shawls. Eventually she worked up the courage to try lace and socks. After learning to turn her first heel she realized that you can learn anything if you set your mind to it, and that learning is really easy if you can take a class with a good teacher. In 2014 she and her husband Curtis moved to Texas and in June 2015 they opened Quixotic Fibers. From the beginning, her vision for the shop was that it is not just a place to buy yarn and fiber, but that it should become a community resource dedicated to the preservation and development of the fiber arts, a place where knitters, crocheters, weavers, and spinners can gather to learn from and to inspire each other.  Over the past 8 years she has developed her crochet skills and developed a love for that craft as well.   In 2024 Carla and Curtis returned to Florida, leaving the Texas store in Emilie's capable hands, and opened a little sister shop to the Texas store in Zephyrhills, Florida.
